Tick remover pliers

Product description: There are a lot of tremendous reasons to be outdoors now and in the coming weeks. Hunters have their fall seasons, anglers their cooler water, hikers trails ablaze in color, campers less crowded places to stay, wildlife watchers seasonal migrations, and more. Sadly, the ticks that increasingly share our woods are out there, too. And, sooner or later, you may end up with one in your skin. These pliers are an inexpensive but handy tool for removing them. You simply slide the cupped pliers under the tick and pull it upward. That removes the tick without leaving any parts attached and captures it for disposal.

Available options: This comes with a magnifying glass to get a closer look at just what kind of tick bit you. The instructions also include information on ticks and disease.

Suggested retail price: $7.99.

Notable: These pliers aren’t just for people. You can use them on your dog, cat and other pets, too. It’s effective at removing deer, brown, lone star, rocky mountain, gulf and dog ticks.

Tip of the week

The availability of food drives a lot of wildlife activity throughout the year. But that’s especially true now, with autumn here. So if you want to see wildlife, for hunting purposes or just wildlife viewing, go where the food is. Look for hard “mast” crops, like acorns, walnuts and hickory nuts, as well as “soft” mast crops like apples and berries. Mature agricultural fields draw wildlife, too, especially at dawn and dusk.

Recipe of the week

Campfire potatoes

Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds red potatoes, cut into chunks
  • 1 large onion
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • CanCooker Creole seasoning

Directions

Probably everyone who’s ever cooked over a campfire has made baked potatoes at one time or another. And with good reason. They’re easy and taste good.

But if you want to try something a little different – that still involves little preparation and little cleanup but leads to a good meal – try this.

Add the butter, Worcestershire sauce, garlic and onions to your CanCooker Jr. Saute on low heat until the onions are translucent.

Stir in the potatoes and season with the Creole seasoning. Latch the lid and cook it all for another 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat, let stand five minutes, then serve.
