The mini mag lite and venison stew.

MIni Maglite

Company: Maglite

Gear type: Flashlight

Product description: You’ve got enough gear to carry into the deer woods without having to lug around a flashlight that’s too big and heavy. Or maybe you just want something small enough to fit in a pocket or backpack as a backup light. The Mini can serve both purposes. It’s bright enough to use as a primary light and small enough to tuck away. It’s anodized inside and out to be corrosion resistant and features a self cleaning switch meant to eliminate oxidation.

Available options: This comes with O rings at each opening to keep water out. It works in two modes, offering beam of light for navigating and a halo mode for hands-free use. There’s a spare lamp in the tail, too.

Suggested retail price: $14.49.

Notable: This comes with a holster so you can wear it on a belt.

Tip of the week

Variable power scopes dominate the market these days. And they certainly offer advantages. When in the woods, though, leave it at or close to the lowest power, say 4X. if a deer shows up in the distance, you’ll likely have time to crank it up. If a deer shots up unexpectedly at close range, though, and the scope is at maximum magnification, it can be difficult if not impossible to get the animal in the scope and in focus.

Recipe of the week

Sweet potato venison stew

Ingredients

  • 1 pound venison, cut into chunks
  • ½ red onion, chopped
  • ¼ pound baby carrots
  • sweet potatoes, chunked
  • ¼ pound mushrooms
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 bay leaf

Directions

In the olive oil, saute the onions, carrots and potatoes. Add the remaining ingredients – except for the venison – and bring to a boil.

Brown the venison in a separate pan.

Once the carrots and potatoes have softened, add the venison. Continue cooking until everything is thoroughly done. Serve with a good homemade bread.
