Lure of the week
Lure name: MaxScent Flatnose Minnow
Company: Berkley (www.berkley-fishing.com)
Lure type: Soft plastic
Sizes and colors: Available in a 4-inch model in 10 colors, including baby bass, black shiner, green pumpkin, natural shad and watermelon red.
Target species: Largemouth and smallmouth bass.
Technique: These lures promise to release “a super-charged scent field that attracts fish in a way never seen before.” Berkley claims that, in testing, the lure catches 45 percent more fish than original Powerbait lures. Its flat nose is meant to make it easy to rig for finesse presentations like a drop shot rig. The baits are said to have a texture that makes fish hang on longer, too.
Sugg. retail price: $6.95 for 10.
Notable: These are brand new to the market, so you may have to pre-order them and wait a bit – perhaps until September — for them to ship. Other shapes are available as well. There are assorted MaxScent worms, chunks and creatures, among others.
Tip of the week
We’ve all largely grown used to air conditioning. It’s in our homes, our workplaces, our vehicles. So spending a weekend camping in summer can seem really, really hot. To minimize that, dress in light-colored clothing and schedule activities – hiking, paddling and the like – for early and late in the day. Finally ventilate your tent by leaving screened windows open.
Recipe of the week
Campfire cones
Ingredients
- 6 waffle cones
- mini marshmallows
- Reese’s pieces
- miniature Reese’s peanut butter cups
- peanut butter
Directions
Here’s a campfire dessert that the kids (and maybe some adults, too) will love.
Stuff the cones with the marshmallows, Reese’s piece, peanut butter cups and peanut butter. Wrap the whole thing in heavy duty aluminum foil.
Place on the coals of your campfire and let sit for about five minutes, or just long enough to melt all the chocolate. Unwrap, let sit for a few minutes to cool, then enjoy.
