Outdoor odyssey day 14, shooting iron sights

Shooting with iron sights is proving tricker than in the past.

OK, so this is frustrating.

For years, AARP mistook me for my dad, given that we have the same name (I’m a junior). And when they sent me mail telling me all that they could do for me should I decide to join, well, it was kind of funny.

Now, not so much.

As my wife reminds me when I complain about getting stuck in traffic or in a store behind “old people,” I’m closer to – if not already in – that group.

Most times I don’t think of myself that way, at least not until after the fact. It’s only when I get up and things hurt for reasons unknown, or because I did something I’ve always done, but now not with the same amount of ease, that’s I get a jolting reminder.

Then, there was this.

I found myself on the range, outdoor odyssey day 14, shooting in a .22 rimfire equipped with iron sights.

Now usually, that wouldn’t be a problem. But recently, my eye doctor – telling me my eyesight was entering bifocal territory – changed my prescription.

One of my contacts improves my long-range vision. The other is for close-up work.

Adjusting has been a bit of a struggle. I often find that I can’t see anything at any distance very well.

The doctors tell me things will get better as this becomes my normal.

But let me tell you.

On the range, with open sights, depending on which eye and contact I’m using, I found that I can either see the sights clearly but with the target a bit of a blur, or I can see the target well with the sight a bit of a blur.

Good grief.

Years ago I was fairly proficient at shooting with both eyes open. I got away from it for no personal reason.

Now, it looks like I’m going back to that again.

At least until I get younger.
