Lure of the week

Lure name: Recon

Company: Riot Baits (www.riotbaits.com)

Lure type: Bladed jig

Sizes and colors: Available in 3/8- and ½-ounce models in eight colors: blue steel, white knight and six “sultry” patterns, chartreuse, chrome, green pumpkin, perch, shad and shiner.

Target species: Largemouth and smallmouth bass, striped bass and northern pike.

Technique: New to the market, this bladed jig features a narrow head with an Arkie-style underbelly so that it can skip and deflect off structure when used around weeds. The lure gets its action from its “spade blade.” Made of hardened steel, with concave and convex sides and an angled lip, it’s meant to provide rapid and consistent vibration.

Tip of the week

If you fish for largemouth bass around weeds, be sure to spend some time casting a plastic worm rigged wacky style. Put an o-ring on it, in the center of the body. Run your hook through it, then cast to the edges of weed beds and let it fall through the water. Repeat that – raising it up and letting it flutter back down – as you work the weedline. Otherwise lethargic bass often can’t help but strike.

Recipe of the week

Sloppy Joe Biscuit Bake

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef or venison
  • 2 packages sloppy Joe seasoning mix
  • 12 ounces tomato paste
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 16-ounce package frozen biscuits

Directions

Here’s an easy-to-prepare meal you can make over the fire in camp. It’s especially good if you have some leftover ground venison from last season.

Brown the meat and chopped up onion in the Dutch oven. Drain the grease, but leve the rest in the oven..

Next, add the seasoning mix, water and tomato paste. Bring all that to a boil.

Finally, cover the top of everything with biscuits. Cover the oven and back 15 to 20 minutes or until the biscuits are done.
