Gear of the week

Gear name: 12-hour warmer

The Zippo Hand Warmer is good for cold weather.

12 hour Black Matte Hand Warmer

Company: Zippo (https://www.everybodyshops.com/zippo-hand-warmer-12-hour-black-matte.html#tab-product1)
Gear type: Hand warmer
Product description: The weather is changing and getting colder and for anyone who spends times outdoors – hunting, fishing, camping and hiking – that means cold fingers. The Zippo 12-hour warmer is an all-metal hand warmer meant to provide comfort. You light it with a match or lighter, then it burns – flameless – for half a day.
Available options: If you’ve got an old one of these lying around in a drawer, know that the newer models are smaller so as to fit in more pockets. They stand 5.3 inches tall, 2 inches wide and 0.4 inches deep. They come in assorted colors.
Suggested retail price: $21.95.
Notable: These Zippos run on common lighter fluid, so they’re easy to refill as needed. That process is easier, too, given the newly-redesigned fill cup that, like a funnel, allows for re-fueling without spills.

Tip of the week

Fall camping can be a lot of fun, even in a tent, but only if you can stay warm at night. A good sleeping bag is key, of course. But don’t forget a sleeping pad. Putting one under your sleeping bag – whether you’re on the ground or in a cot – will guard against cold air. And if you have no pad, improvise by sleeping on top of some of your other clothes.

Recipe of the week

Steelhead steaks

Ingredients

  • 4 to 8 steelhead steaks, about 1 inch thick
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon parsley
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon basil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • pepper to taste

Directions

Heat 3 tablespoons olive oil in a skillet. Add the steaks, sauté them, then remove – but be sure to keep them warm.

Add the onions, garlic and seasonings to the skillet. Cook for roughly two minutes, then add the tomatoes. Lay the steaks over that mixture and cover. Cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes, or until the fish flakes easily.
