Lure of the week

Lure name: Erratic shiner

Company: LIVETARGET Lures (https://livetargetlures.com/)

Lure type: Spoon

A dove recipe makes for good eating.

Erratic shiner

Sizes and colors: Available in four sizes – ¼-, 3/8-. ½- and ¾-ounces – in 10 colors, including gold/black, silver/blue, gold/green, glow/black and glow/pearl.

Target species: Largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleyes, northern pike, muskies, trout and salmon.

Technique: When it comes to fishing lures, spoons are called, well, spoons because that’s what they look like, metal spoons. This is said to be something different. The inner core of this lure is made of metal, but it’s shaped like a minnow. The outer “exo-skin,” or spoon-shaped part is hard, see-through plastic. The results, LIVETARGET says, is a lure that looks like a minnow to predatory fish but acts like a spoon in the water. You can jig with it, troll with it or, as cast with it, or, as the makers say, “chuck and wind” it.

Sugg. retail price: $9.99.

Notable: One other thing said to be unique about this lure is its action. Traditional spoons sway side to side when retrieved, courtesy of their cup shape. These sway, too, but also “snap” at the end of each roll. It’s on the snap that most bites are said to occur.

Tip of the week

There are still a few weeks left to take advantage of the stink. Say what? Scent travels further and better in warm water than in cold water. And while we’re fast approaching the last few days of summer, the first few weeks of fall can be warm, too. And under such conditions, it pays to use “stinkbaits” to pursue channel catfish. Chicken livers, chicken gizzards soaked in garlic, scented dough baits, commercial baits, all are effective in attracting fish at this time. They can really turn fish on if you get on the water in the midst of an Indian summer warming spell, so pay attention to the weather and be ready to leverage any changes.

Recipe of the week

Baked dove

Ingredients

  • 10 doves
  • 3 apples, cored and sliced
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 10 slices bacon, each cut in half
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

This is a simple yet tasty dove recipe.

Start by seasoning the doves with the salt and pepper.

Next, arrange the apples in the bottom of a baking dish coated with oil so as to be non-stick. Top each apple slice with a piece of sliced onion.

Wrap the doves in bacon so that each breast is completely covered. Layer those overtop the onions. Finally, pour the broth into the dish.

Cover and bake for about one hour, or until the dove breasts are tender, being sure to remove the cover for the last 15 minutes.
