CanCooker Jr.

Product description: Meals are a big part of any camping trip. But only so long as making them is fun. If you spend all your time slaving over the stove, and too little fishing or hiking or whatever, you’ve missed the point. Enter the Can Cooker Jr. Made of food grade aluminum and with a 2-gallon capacity, it’s essentially a steam cooker capable of feeding up to 10 people in 30 to 90 minutes. You add meat, vegetables and liquid, in the order called for in whatever recipe you choose, close the lid, put it over your fire (or stove, if you want to experiment at home) and walk away. Come back at the prescribed time and your dinner is ready. When you’re done, wash it out and store it in the included bag. It’s really that simple.

Available options: One accessory worth adding to your Can Cooker Jr. is the optional stainless steel rack. It makes cleaning the inside easier and faster.

Suggested retail price: $59.99.

Notable: If you want to cook for larger crowds, you can get the full-size CanCooker with its 4-gallon capacity for $89.99.

Tip of the week

Time is running out. If you want to squeeze in one more camping trip with your kids before school starts, you’ve got to act fast. Just be sure to make it fun by letting them be involved. Yes, it’s easier in the short term if you do all the planning, all the packing and all the set up. But children like to be part of the crew. So spend time before leaving home deciding where to camp based on what activities they want to do. Then, when you get there, let them help pitch the tent, collect firewood, cook meals and the like. The goal is to make every outing an adventure, so let them be intrepid explorers.

Recipe of the week

Beer steamed shrimp

Ingredients

  • 1 pound extra large shrimp, cleaned (about 30 shrimp)
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 gloves garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 2 ounces beer
  • CanCooker Creole seasoning

Directions

Here’s an easy way to use your CanCooker Jr.

Spray the inside of the CanCooker with non-stick spray. Add the beer, butter, garlic, salt and pepper. Mix it all together.

Close and latch the lid, put it over medium heat.

In the meantime, place the shrimp in a bowl. Sprinkle with the Creole seasoning.

When the cooker starts steaming, carefully remove the lid and add the shrimp. Close it up and latch it again.

Let the cooker go for about 4 minutes, then remove from heat. Put the shrimp in a bowl, garnish with lemon and serve.
