Lure of the week

Lure name: Bluegill 4

The Bluegill 4 is a bass fishing bait.

Bluegill 4

Company: Savage Gear (www.savagegear-usa.com)

Lure type: Swimbait

Sizes and colors: The bluegill 4 is available in 4-inch, ¾-ounce model in three colors: redear, darkgill and lightgill.

Target species: Largemouth, smallmouth and striped bass, muskies and northern pike.
Technique: It’s a bluegill’s lot in life, to be prey for larger predators. In lakes and rivers, they’re frequently targeted by bass during the spawn, when bluegills are often picked off as they try to eat eggs. The Bluegill 4 is meant to mimic one of those baitfish and look lifelike doing it. The lure is based on a 3D scan of an actual bluegill. These come in floating or sinking models. All have nylon mesh in the joint section to prevent tearing. The bottom hook, meanwhile, can be removed for fishing near the bottom.

Sugg. retail price: $9.99.

Notable: There are 5- and 6-inch models of this lure, too. The Bluegill 5 is a fixed-hook design, while the Bluegill 6 is a thru-hook design. Both are available in additional colors.

Tip of the week

Some will be using gift cards left over from Christmas, while others will be hitting an outdoor show or two. However they do it, plenty of anglers are or will be shopping for new rods in the weeks ahead. If that’s you, look for a rod that comes with an extra spool. You can load one with one type of line, say 6-pound mono, and the other with something different, like 10-pound braid, and switch to match conditions without a lot of hassle.

Recipe of the week

Peppercorn venison steaks

Ingredients

  • 3 12-ounce deer tenderloins
  • 2 large onions, sliced thick
  • 3 tablespoons Parmesan cheese
  • 12 large mushrooms
  • 3 sprigs freshly chopped parsley
  • 6 slices fresh tomato, cut thick
  • Black peppercorns, freshly cracked

Directions

If you’re a fan of black pepper – and who isn’t – this is a fine recipe.

To begin, season each steak with the peppercorns. Place on a grill or in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onions, tomatoes and mushrooms.

Cook for three minutes per side. The meat should be medium rare.

Place the meat on plates and let it rest for a few minutes. Top with the tomatoes, onions and mushrooms, then sprinkle Parmesan cheese over it all. Garnish with the parsley.
