Winter weather forces trout stocking adjustments

The wintry weather is playing havoc with trout stockings.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission kicked off its annual stocking effort on March 2. It’s supposed to get roughly two million fish in waters across the state no later than April 18, opening day of the season in western Pennsylvania.
And it will. Just not as expected.
Thanks to all this snow, a number of stockings planned for this week have already been rescheduled.
The entire length of Loyalhanna Creek, from east of Ligonier all the way into Latrobe, was to get fish on March 3, for example. The weather put the kibosh on that, though.
“Between the stream being largely frozen over and the snow all over the banks, and the forecast for the rest of the week, we’ve had to reschedule,” said Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission waterways conservation officer Matt Kauffman.
That stocking – which was also to release fish into Indian Lake, Indian Creek and Sewickley Creek – was reset for March 16.
Planned stockings of Big Sewickley Creek, Bull Creek and Deer Creek in Allegheny County, North Fork and South Fork Pine Creek and Plum Creek in Armstrong, North Fork Big Sewickley Creek and Raccoon Lake in Beaver, Connoquenessing Creek, Slippery Rock Creek and Thorn Creek in Butler, Blacklegs Cree, Canoe Creek, Toms Run and Yellow Creek in Indiana, and Dutch Fork Creek, Dutch Fork Lake and Mingo Creek in Washington have been rescheduled, too.
Details on the new dates and times when fish will be released can be found at www.fishandboat.com.
