The eagle talon buck

Larry Weir has been bowhunting since high school. That takes in more than a few years.

Still, he never shot a buck quite like the one he got this year.

The Ross Township man was archery hunting in Pennsylvania’s wildlife management unit 2B in the early season that starts in September. In years past, that allowed only for the taking of antlerless deer.

Pennsylvania Game Commissioners changed that prior to last season, though, the idea being that if the goal was to control deer numbers in urban areas, hunters should be allowed to take bucks and does.

That paid off for Weir, as he killed a nice 8-point.

That in itself was gratifying, he said. Taking any deer in an area where they have so many hiding places, and access is so limited, is a real reward.

“It’s always so satisfying when you get one down there,” Weir said.

This buck, though, was special in another way.

When Weir got a good look at it, he noticed that one of its brow tines was bent backwards in a hook shape.

“It looks like an eagle’s talon,” Weir said. “It’s really neat looking.”
