You want outdoor extras? We’ve got outdoor extras …

Gear of the week

Gear name: Extractor

Company: Sawyer Products (https://www.everybodyshops.com/the-extractor-bite-and-sting-first-aid-pump-kit.html)

Spring will soon be here, brining with it stinging insects.

The Extractor

Gear type: Bite and sting first aid

Product description: The last few days have hinted at what’s to come: warmer weather. That means fishing, hiking, paddling, camping … and stinging insects and snakes and other things that bite. Enter the Extractor. This vacuum pump provides the most powerful suction available for removal of venoms and poisons.

Available options: This comes with four plastic cups. You select the ones that best covers the area that’s been bitten or stung, then use the pump to remove irritants from below your skin. Washing the cups after use means they can be re-used over and over.

Suggested retail price: $16.99.

Notable: The Extractor is a pump, not a syringe. That means you can work it with one hand. It works best on areas of the body with lots of softer tissue, rather than muscle.

Tip of the week

As a general rule, the best day to go fishing is any one that ends with a Y, right? You get time off, you go. In late winter and early spring, though, it really pays to watch the weather. A day or two of unseasonably warm weather can raise water temperatures just enough to turn trout on to feeding. On the other hand, a sudden cold front can shut things down in a hurry. So keep an eye on the weather and find time to go when conditions are right.

Recipe of the week

Walking S’mores

Ingredients

  • individual bags (usually 10.5 ounces) of Teddy Grahams or similar cookies
  • chocolate
  • marshamallows

Directions

If you’ve ever been to a high school football game – or anywhere else with a volunteer-run concession stand – you’ve probably had Walking Tacos.

Well, here’s the dessert version. It’s great for around campfires, especially if you have small children (or anyone with a sweet tooth).

Open the bag of cookies (it helps to break them up a bit for kids first) and add a few squares of chocolate. Toast a marshmallow or two over the fire.

Place the warm marshmallows in the bag and squeeze and knead it – don’t rip the bag – a bit until everything is good and mixed up. Eat with a fork or spoon and avoid sticking fingers!
