Lure of the week

Lure name: Furiko Pendulum

Rabbit hunting and fishing

Furiko Pendulum

Company: Matzuo America (www.matzuo.com/)
Lure type: Squarebill crankbait
Sizes and colors: To be available in two sizes, 2.5 and 3 inches, in eight colors.
Target species: Largemouth, smallmouth and striped bass.
Technique: What makes this lure different is what’s said to be a first-to-market innovation, an internal weighted pendulum. first to market internal weighted pendulum. It has a dense tungsten weight suspended in its body. It swings 360 degrees, striking side-mounted brass blades and a front-mounted sound resonator to create a combination of thumping sounds. In addition, the pendulum – combined with the lure’s shape — create a side-to-side hunting movement on the retrieve. This controlled wander corrects itself back to center with no wash-out. And when the retrieve is paused, the swinging pendulum produces a slow rocking sway as the bait floats to the surface.
Sugg. retail price: $4.49.
Notable: Just unveiled publicly this summer, the Furiko Pendulum is scheduled to arrive in stores in spring. The 2.5-inch bait dives 2 to 5 feet and includes size 4 Matzuo treble hooks, while the 3-inch bait dives 4 to 6 feet and includes size 2 hooks.

Tip of the week

With the post-Christmas grouse season a thing of the past for now – and maybe for a while, quite frankly – what’s a small game hunter to do? Perhaps give rabbits a try. Like all wildlife, they try to conserve energy where they can, especially during winter. So when the weather gets cold in the late season, look for them on the sunny side of brush rows, forest edges and similar cover.

Recipe of the week

S’mores cake

Ingredients

  • 1 pre-baked angel food cake
  • 6 chocolate bars
  • 1 or 2 packages of graham crackers
  • large marshmallows

Directions

Winter doesn’t have to spell an end to camping or even just playing outside. But you do want to feel warm.

And nothing adds a few calories to the diet at a time when you need them, and offers a sweet treat, like this dessert.

Tear the angel food cake into chunks and spread it around Dutch oven until the bottom is covered. Break the crackers into pieces and spread those on top of and through the cake.

Layer on the chocolate, also broken into pieces. Finally, cover everything with the marshmallows.

Place hot coals under and on top of the oven and cook. It won’t take long, just a few minutes enough to melt the chocolate and brown the marshmallows.
Scoop out and serve.
