Lure of the week

Lure name: Reaper

The Phantom Reaper is a new fishing lure for muskies, pike, walleyes and lake trout.

Phantom Reaper

Company: Phantom Lures (www.phantomlures.com)

Lure type: Weighted soft plastic

Sizes and colors: Available in a 6-inch, 5-ounce model in jumbo perch, white bass, carpe diem, crappie, bluegill, smallmouth bass and grayling.

Target species: Muskies, northern pike, walleyes and lake trout.
Technique: The Reaper can be cast and retrieved to catch fish. It was designed specifically to be used with a vertical presentation, though. The idea is to drop it over and through schools of baitfish or near structure to entice bites from large, suspended predators. It sinks quickly and can then be jigged.

Sugg. retail price: $24.99.

Notable: These lures feature highly-detailed, life-like appearances. The company calls the look its “live series.” They’re manufactured in the United States.

Tip of the week

The popularity of paddling, be it in a canoe or kayak, continues to grow. And that’s a good thing. But what if you had to rescue a friend on the water? Do you carry a throw bag and have you practiced using it? If the answer is no, fix that. If you’re on shore, stand on the tail end of the rope, then throw the bag underhand directly toward the person in need. When they grab the rope, reel them in. If you’re in another boat, sit on the tail end of the rope and throw it the same way.

Recipe of the week

Jalapeno dove poppers

Ingredients

  • de-boned dove breasts
  • 1 can jalapeno peppers
  • Cream cheese
  • bacon

Directions

With dove season upon us, the International Hunter Education Association is sharing this recipe for those who can hit the fast-flying birds.

Slice the jalapenos in half lengthwise (and remove the seeds and veins if you want less heat).

Fill the cavity of each pepper with cream cheese. Top with a dove breast, then wrap it in bacon. Secure the whole thing with a toothpick.

Grill, turning once, for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the bacon is crisp.
