A lever action shotgun? You bet.

One of the perks of this job is getting the chance to try out new gear every now and again.

So it was that I found myself on the shooting range recently.

Henry Repeating Arms has come out with a new – or rather, two new – lever-action shotguns. Cool, right.
We live in a world where pumps and autoloaders rule, with the occasional classic double barrel, be it a side-by-side or over-under, mixed in. And of course some, often kids, carry single barrels.

But lever actions?

That’s the world of calibers like the venerable old 30-30. Lever-action shotguns are rare.

Henry’s two versions are both available in .410 gauge. They’re very similar, except for barrel length, sights and availability of switching chokes.

As part of my ongoing outdoor odyssey, I tested the one with the shorter barrel – 20 inches rather than 24 – and buckhorn sights. It’s tabbed by the company as the more versatile of the two.

I can’t speak to that.

But I can say it was loads of fun to shoot. I did a review of it – you can check that out – but I’ll tell you I’m a fan.

A Henry Big Boy in .44 magnum is a part of my collection at home, so I’ve been a proponent of Henry rifles for a while. I’ve loved lever-action longer than that, too.

So whether I end up buying one of the company’s shotguns or not, I’d never turn down the chance to shoot one.
