Gear of the week

Gear name: May Day

Crappie fishing and turkey hunting are spring traditions.

May Day

Company: Triple Toe Calls (https://www.everybodyshops.com/may-day-turkey-call-triple-toe-calls.html)

Gear type: Glass pot call

Product description: Pot calls can be made out of a variety of materials. So why glass? Well, glass glass are louder than their slate counterparts. That means they really shine in windy conditions and overcast days, or when hunting large fields or really thick cover. The high-pitched yelps and cuts cut through the wind, meaning they can be heard by turkeys at long distances. In that sense, they’re a great locator call, too.

Available options: This can be used wet or dry.

Suggested retail price: $27.99.

Notable: This is a relatively small pot call, size-wise. That makes it a good choice for young hunters, women or anyone with small hands.

Tip of the week

Crappie anglers have been fishing using minnows and bobbers for, well, a long, long time. Simple, right? Yes, but on days when things get slow, there’s a way to tweak your presentation. Suspend your minnows three to four feet under the bobber, on a #4 hook, with no other weight attached to the line. That will let the minnows fall slowly through the water. If you don’t get a bite after a while, sweep your rod – don’t reel in, but sweep the rod – so that the minnow comes close to the surface. Then, let it drift back down again. That little action can make the difference.

Recipe of the week

Swedish meatballs

Ingredients

  • 46 oz can tomato juice
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 pounds hamburger
  • 1½ cups elbow macaroni
  • 2 eggs
  • onion flakes
  • garlic salt

Directions

Have yourself a Can Cooker? They’re pretty slick in that they cook using steam, on the stove or over the fire, with little in the way of preparation beforehand or cleanup after.

Here’s a recipe that’s simple to make in one, too.

Mix the tomato juice, brown sugar, sugar, vinegar, cinnamon and salt cooker. Separately, in a bowl, mix the remaining ingredients. Form that into meatballs.

Drop the meatballs into the cooker. Seal it shut and cook for 30 minutes on medium heat.

Remove from heat and let stand 10 minutes, then serve.
