Gear of the week

Gear name: Solar Shower

Company: Coleman (http://shop.everybodyadventures.com/Coleman-5-Gallon-Camp-Shower-p/eacoleshwr.htm)

Gear type: 5-gallon shower

Product description: It’s one thing to go camping with the mindset that you’ll be forgoing some creature comforts. But showering? Coleman’s solar shower attracts and holds heat, even on cool days, using the sun so that there’s always warm water for getting clean, or even washing dishes. It’s 5-gallon capacity allows for taking multiple showers without refilling, too.

Available options: The shower can be controlled using an on/off valve located on the showerhead. You can decide how much or how little water to let out at a time.

Suggested retail price: $14.99.

Notable: This has a heavy-duty PVC handle built in. You can carry it with the handle or use it to hang the shower from a limb, pole or anything else.

Tip of the week

Trying to decide where to hang your deer stands for this fall? Think edges. Whitetails are the epitome of edge creatures. They want to be where two habitat types or two geographical features meet. Think of where a woodlot meets a field or a flat mountaintop drops into a saddle. Deer, as often as not, will be in such places. If you’re not seeing deer, chances are you’re not maximizing the edge component of the landscape in selecting your stand.

Recipe of the week

Blueberry corn pancakes

Ingredients

  • 1 16-ounce package corn muffin mix
  • 1¼ cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup blueberries

Directions

Here’s a tasty breakfast fun to make when camping.

In a bowl, stir together the muffin mix, milk and eggs until just blended. Fold in the blueberries.

Pour the batter out – about a ¼ cup at a time – onto a lightly greased skillet. Cook about two to three minutes per side or until lightly browned, then serve with warm syrup.
