Lure of the week
Lure name: Super Rooster Tail
Super Rooster Tail
Company: Yakima Bait Co. (www.yakimabait.com)
Lure type: Spinner
Sizes and colors: Available in 1/8-, 1/6-, ¼-, 3/8- and ½-ounce models in 22 finishes, including metallic, glitter and shimmer varieties.
Target species: Smallmouth bass, trout, walleyes and panfish.
Technique: The Super Rooster Tail combines all the features of the original Rooster Tail with the action of a spinnerbait. It’s an effective bait for fishing both lakes and moving water. Cast and retrieve it – upstream if on a river – being sure to vary the depth at which it’s running to get it to where the fish are. That can sometimes mean casting out, counting as it falls, then retrieving.
Sugg. retail price: $3.69 to $4.14, depending on size.
Notable: Unlike traditional Rooster Tails, these come with a double hook. Despite having two points instead of one, it’s meant to reduce snags.
Tip of the week
The later into fall it gets, the more the bass fishing changes. On unusually warm, sunny days, fish may move toward docks or rip rap that capture and hold heat. Most often, though, it’s time to think of fishing vertically rather than horizontally. Drop shot rigs worked around bottom structure can pay dividends.
Recipe of the week
Savory dumplings
Ingredients
- 2 cups pancake mix
- 1 tablespoon minced onion
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 dash garlic powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons poultry seasoning
- ½ cup water
- 1 dash cayenne pepper
Directions
Here’s a recipe for a tasty side dish picked up from a fellow sportsman. It makes a great side dish for any fish or game meal.
Combine the pancake mix, onion, salt, poultry seasoning, cayenne and garlic. Add enough water to form a lightly stiff dough.
Form it into balls and drop those into a stew that’s already fully cooked and ready to serve. Cover and cook for 7 to 10 minutes or until the dumplings are fluffy.
