You want outdoor extras? We’ve got outdoor extras…

Lure of the week

Lure name: Kasmaster

The Acme Kastmaster can be jigged for ice fishing.

Acme Kastmaster

Company: Acme Tackle Co. (www.acmetackle.com)

Lure type: Spoon

Sizes and colors: Available in a variety of sizes, from 1/24- to 3/8-ounces, in two colors, gold and nickel.

Target species: Trout, smallmouth bass and walleyes..

Technique: Acme Kasmaster spoons are a tried and true lure, especially popular among trout anglers. They cast far and wobble on the retrieve without causing line twist. There’s a new variety on the market, however. Acme is offering Kasmasters with hammered finishes. There are dozens of dimples on each side of the lure. They’re meant to reflect light – thereby making the lure flash in the water – while also giving the lure a little extra vibration. They can be fished in open water or even jigged vertically for ice fishing.

Sugg. retail price: $3.49 to 3.99, depending on size.

Notable: Made in the United States, these lures are brand new to the market. They are available online already, though, and may be in stores, too.

Tip of the week

This is the time of year ice fishing fans live for. But, if that’s you, don’t let your eagerness to get on the water override safety considerations. And at a minimum, there should be four inches of new, clear ice before you go out on it. Even then, remember that ice around moving water is often weaker. So, too, is ice around logs, rocks and other features that can soak up the sun’s heat. Finally, whenever possible, fish with a friend in case of emergencies.

Recipe of the week

One pot chili

Ingredients

  • 1 jar medium chunky salsa
  • 2 small cans black beans
  • 1 large can stewed tomatoes with peppers
  • 2 small cans white beans
  • 1 large can tomato sauce
  • 2 small cans red beans
  • 1 large can homminy

Directions

Time spent outdoors in winter can be fun. But it also calls for recharging with hot food.

Here’s a recipe that quick to make and simple, too, so that it can be made on the stove in camp or even over a stove or fire outside.

Simply combine all the ingredients in one pot and cook for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it’s hot and ready to go.
