Sporting clays is a fun and exciting way to introduce young people to the shooting sports.

This is for kids who like to make things go bang.

California Hill Gun Club has a youth sporting clays team called the Smokin’ Guns. It’s open to boys and girls in fifth through 12th grades. There is a college division for older shooters, too.

All get to compete against one another and other teams in shotgun sports.

The catch?

There’s not one really. Joining the team is free, and it’s open to would-be shooters from pretty much anywhere.

In fact, the club is looking to attract shooters from a wider range than just the Mon Valley, said spokesman Jon Difilippo.

No experience is necessary either.

“Kids sometimes think they have to be Annie Oakley or something to join. But they don’t need any experience, actually,” Defilippo said.

“We teach them everything they need to know.”

The team holds regular practices throughout its season. It ultimately competes in local shoots as well as the State Shoot. Some shooters have even gone on to national competition.

Shooters never have to pay to compete, though they and parents are expected to help with fundraising to cover costs.
